February 22nd, 2012, in New York City, people demonstrated against the Novartis pharmaceutical corporation and demanded that the corporation abandon its lawsuit against India. Novartis is trying to stop Indian production of high-quality generic versions of the anti-cancer drug Glivec. “The Novartis version of the drug costs roughly ten times the cost of the high-quality generics on the market and the company is trying to stop production of those versions.” India is known as the “pharmacy of the developing world” because it exports large quantities of affordable high-quality generic drugs.
